Growing from the Inside Out While Marketing Your Books with Courtnaye Richard

It’s so hard to trust in what we can’t see at the beginning of a new year (not to mention year three of COVID). My guest today is all too familiar with this.

Courtnaye Richard is the author of Inside Out with Courtnaye, a 52-week devotional to help us grow from the inside out one week at a time. I couldn’t wait to have Courtnaye on the Book Marketing Mania podcast to encourage us all as we grow in our walk with God, while he’s walking us through our book marketing plans.

Roller Coaster Adventures

First up, I had to share this fun tidbit about Courtnaye: She absolutely loves roller coasters and amusement parks. In fact, she and her husband honeymooned at Disney World! Can you imagine? While I’ve had to retire my thrill-seeking ways as I’ve gotten older, Courtnaye still seeks out the next big ride, even scouting out amusement parks while on speaking engagements.

Courtnaye’s Inside Out Devotional

The goal of “Inside Out with Courtnaye” is to help women deepen their walk with the Lord weekly. It’s a practical, intentional guide that encourages setting aside dedicated time with God for scripture and reflection.

Each month has a unique theme, like controlling your emotions or cultivating Christian character—a perfect fit for group studies or individual use.

Courtnaye's target audience is primarily married women who are moms, aged 35 to 55. However, single women can get just as much value from it.

Navigating Book Marketing During a Pandemic

Launching a book during a pandemic is no small feat, and Courtnaye gave us a peek into her strategy. With everyone stuck indoors, she decided to initiate a global study group. Using Zoom and social media promotions, she invited women worldwide to join her for 52 weeks of study and fellowship.

Each month’s theme, like controlling emotions or unity in the body of Christ, struck a chord with participants, fostering a sense of community even in isolation.

The Challenge of Trusting God

One universal struggle for authors and speakers is trusting God through the unknowns. Courtnaye advises diving deep into scriptures on trust and faith. Proverbs 3:5-6 is her go-to:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

She suggests reinforcing this by reading books on trust and waiting on God to strengthen faith during uncertain times.

Remember, God moves in His perfect timing, often bringing the greatest glory through our patience.

Setting Healthy Boundaries and Self-Care

If you’re juggling multiple responsibilities like writing, speaking, and family life, you know the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care. Courtnaye insists on making time with God a non-negotiable part of your day.

Whether it’s 30 minutes or an hour, plan it, block it off, and let nothing interfere. During her quiet times, Courtnaye silences her phone, avoids emails, and eschews social media distractions. This intentional quality time with the Lord recharges her, making her more effective in all other areas of life.

Building Your Platform and Marketing Genius

Transitioning from self-published to seeking a traditional publisher, Courtnaye shares her insights on building a robust platform. She emphasizes the importance of Facebook ads and engaging your audience to grow your email list.

With more people connected to you via email, promoting your book becomes significantly easier.

For those hesitant about investing in ads for freebies, Courtnaye’s experience of seeing her email list grow quickly in a short period of time shows that it’s worth the expenditure. Whether it’s a sample chapter from your book or a valuable tip sheet, offering something free can effectively attract new readers.

Another fun initiative Courtnaye’s involved in is her blog’s cover stories, where she features and uplifts other women. It’s a fantastic way to collaborate and introduce her audience to others.

PR and Mentorship Expertise

In addition to writing and speaking, Courtnaye also offers extensive expertise in PR and marketing. Whether it’s designing websites, creating press kits, developing marketing campaigns, or mentoring other authors and speakers, Courtnaye does it all. Her approach is very hands-on, ensuring her clients' messages get the attention they deserve.

When it comes to pitching yourself for podcasts, TV shows, or print publications, Courtnaye’s advice is straightforward:

Be proactive. Reach out directly, share your story, and align it with the media outlet’s target audience.

If you’re speaking, use your platform to showcase your teaching, and don't be afraid to introduce yourself to event hosts.
