Ready to start a podcast to build your audience and market your book?

Here are the first 5 things you need.

Note: this is specifically for a solo audio podcast.

1. Podcast Name

Make the name of your podcast easy to say, easy to understand and easy to remember. Jot down a few names youโ€™re thinking of and check to make sure theyโ€™re not already taken. You can search the podcast player app you listen with, or on Google.

2. Cover Art

Create your podcast cover art using the Canva podcast template or hire a designer or barter with a friend to design you one. I mention it in the very beginning as you may need some extra time to get your cover art finalized.

3. USB Microphone and Headphones

A good microphone is critical to have a great listening experience. But you don't have to break the bank on this. And you can always upgrade later. Don't let your budget keep you from getting started.

Plus, you have to start just to see if you like podcasting before investing in fancy equipment.

I use the ATR-2100 USB Microphone.

If and when you have a bigger budget, I'd look at the Shure MV7 setup.

If you like to geek out on tech stuff, this video from Buzzsprout evaluates several microphones. The Samson Q2U is similar to the one I use.

I mentioned on the show that one of my favorite podcast hosts, Chelsi Jo, of the popular Systemize Your Life podcast, talked in January about still using the microphone she began with. She's now at over 2 million downloads, records in her closet, and her audio sounds just fine.

Grab a pair of headphones that will block out any background noise you have going on while you record. I like wired over-the-ear ones. This is especially important when you record with a guest or as a guest.

4. Recording and Editing Software

Get started recording your podcast for free with Audacity or Descript.

Descript is super cool as you can see your recording and edit it as if it was a Word file. So as you edit the text document, it edits your audio file as well.

If you are starting with interviews, you can use Zoom just be sure to use these settings.

I know there are other options but since I haven't tried them yet, I'll wait to recommend them.

The most important thing with any software is to be sure you are choosing your USB microphone within your recording software.

5. Podcast Hosting Platform

I recommend Buzzsprout because it was SO easy for me to start the podcast. Their service is amazing and I never have any issues uploading to Apple or with my episodes publishing on time.
